If it happens to go somehow to Harghita county, you simply can’t miss the Butterflies House from Praid. Praid is well known for its Praid Saline and for its delicious kurtos-kalacs, one of the most tasteful cakes from the region (Țara Secuilor).
Yet, one of the most beautiful places in Praid was set up back in 2012: the first permanent buterflies house. The construction is comprised of two buildings and was created for this purpose only. They host a reception, a souvenir shop and a location called “flying space” characterized by a tropical microclimate, decorated with tropical plants and having a small lake and a circular aisle. In 2018, the Buterfly House from Praid has been nominated at the Arhitectura. 6 Bienale of Contemporary Architecture.
The buterflies from the Buterfly House comes in Romania from the buterfly farms from South America, Asia and Africa, as pupas. Here they are put into a special incubator where, depending on the species some beautiful buterflies see the light of the day in a couple of days. Each year, during the summer time, the Buterfly House from Praid welcome its guests. They witness to an extraordinary show of colours of some hundreds of specimens, representing 8-9 basic species and 6-7 metamorphic species. Because these beautiful creatures live just few weeks, specialists who work at the Buterfly House in Praid look to come up with new species everytime so that visitors could come back and see different species.
The blue buterfly, the giant owl buterflies – known for their laziness – or the kite buterfly which flies like a sheet are among the permanent guests of the Buterfly House from Praid. All these creatures create a dream-like atmosphere, as you enter into a magic world of colors, where buterflies of all sizes – from little ones to bigger ones – lay on your shoulder, hair or in the palm of your hand. So, as holiday is in the air, and if you want to spend few hours in a tropical world, halt a bit at Praid, and after visiting the Saline and enjoy a kurtos-kalacs, make your entrance into the fairy-tale world where live hundreds of marvelous buterflies.
